Account Numbers – Importance of Checking in with Your Bookkeeper

Video information:

In this video, Ciaran highlights the importance of checking your accounting software numbers with a bookkeeper.

How’s it going? Nice to see you again.

Now, whether you’re using Xero or another accounting software tool, it’s just important that you get a couple of things right. Now as an FD, I will always sit down with a bookkeeper once a month when everything has been done, and I can just go down and trial balance with the bookkeeper and literally just confirm that everything is correct, complete, reconciled, any issues to deal with, because when it comes to reporting numbers to the CEO, and to Board and Investors, we just want to know what the correct position is. So, until you have an FD, it’s a very simple process. Not just to expect that you’re going to digest 50 pages of numbers straight off Xero, sometimes it’s worth just going down the trial balance with your bookkeeper, and just asking the simple question, is that right? Is that right? Is that right? And then forcing or making sure that your bookkeeper just knows what is going on, what is complete, and if there are any issues you can quickly see what they are and quickly deal with them. See you on the next one.

Ciaran is a VirtualFD or freelance finance director for early stage companies. He’s on a mission to help business owners like you to Own Your Numbers. He won FD/CFO of the Year at the 2019 British Accountancy Awards.
